The Bombay Stock Exchange's Sensitive Index, Sensex, moved higher by 0.64 per cent while the wide-based Nifty gained 0.53 per cent at 5128, above the psychologically important 5100 mark. Amongst the sectoral indices, BSE Auto Index was the top gainer up 1.15 per cent, BSE Oil and Gas Index advanced 1.10 per cent and BSE Consumer Durables Index moved 0.80 per cent higher. BSE IT Index (down 0.10 per cent) and BSE Banking Index (0.09 per cent) were trading in the negative zone.

State-owned refiner Indian Oil Corp (IOC) has tendered to buy one or more cargoes of crude oil for loading in May, a tender document showed on Monday.

The tender, issued on Friday, specified up to 88 crudes or combinations of crudes to be offered into the tender, which will close on March 10 and March 11 with validity until March 12. Traders said they expected news of the award on Friday. Most of the specified crude oil grades were Nigerian or Angolan. In the past IOC has tended to buy large volumes of West African crudes.

A pusher tug, a small barge that propels a bigger vessel, drowned in the Hooghly near Prinsep Ghat on Friday night, releasing oil into the river.

Attempts to salvage barge Bhagadutta , owned by the Assam government, might start from Monday, Calcutta Port Trust officials said. “The barge drowned near Prinsep Ghat and the Man o’ War jetty, upstream to Vidyasagar Setu. We have located the exact point of the wreck, which is away from the navigation channel,” said a port trust official.

KUALA LUMPUR: Jemaah Islamiyah is believed to be the terrorist group planning the attacks on oil tankers along the Straits of Malacca.

ONGC Videsh Ltd, the overseas arm of state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC), has made two significant oil discoveries in a block in north eastern Syria.

OVL and its partner IPR Mediterranean Exploration Ltd discovered Rashid and Abu Khashab oilfields in Block-24, the company said in a statement here. Rashid-1 well, drilled up to 1,739 meters, tested oil at the rate of 1,343 barrels per day (bpd). The second discovery well Abu Khashab-1 penetrated Jeribe formation of Miocene age at 950 meters and tested oil with a rate of 900 bpd.

New Delhi: State-owned oil firms will invest over Rs 77,500 crore for adding 44.2 million tonne of refining capacity by 2012, petroleum minister Murli Deora said in Lok Sabha on Thursday.

In a written reply, Deora said Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) is investing Rs 29,777 crore for building a new refinery at Paradip in Orissa with an annual production capacity of 15 million tonne. Bharat Petroleum Corporation’s joint venture is investing Rs 11,397 crore in a 6-million tonne unit at Bina in Madhya Pradesh, while Hindustan Petroleum Corporation is spending Rs 18,919 crore in building a nine-million tonne refinery at Bhatinda in Punjab. Besides, Mangalore Refinery is investing Rs 12,412 crore in expanding its 11.82-million tonne refinery to 15 million tonne. These and other capacity additions would raise India’s oil refining capacity to 153.832 million tonne by the end of the Eleventh Five Year plan ending in 2012 from 109.586 million tonne now, he said. Other capacity addition projects include Rs 2,869 crore expansion of IOC’s Haldia refinery by 1.5 million tonne to 7.5 million tonne and Panipat unit expansion to 15 million tonnes (from 12 million tonnes) at Rs 1,008 crore.

NEW YORK: Crude oil traded near $81 a barrel after rising as a US government report showed that refinery operating rates climbed to the highest level since October, bolstering demand.

Oil rose to a seven-week high yesterday after the Energy Department report showed refinery utilization increased 0.7%age point to 81.9% in the week ended Feb. 26. Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg News forecast that there would be no change. Inventories of crude oil climbed 4.03 million barrels, more than three times what was estimated. Crude oil for April delivery traded at $80.94 a barrel, up 7 cents, in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange at 10:10 a.m. Sydney time. Yesterday, the contract increased $1.19, or 1.5%, to $80.87, the highest settlement since Jan. 11.
