BP to Ramp Up Leaking Oil Collection Over 2-3 Weeks - BusinessWeek

July 10 (Bloomberg) -- BP Plc today started removing the cap collecting some of the oil leaking from the Macondo well in the Gulf of Mexico to allow the company to install a more efficient containment system.

London-based BP expects to have a new seal on the gushing well within four to seven days. It will take two to three weeks to connect all the vessels involved and reach the collection capacity target of as much as 80,000 barrels a day, more than the estimated amount of the leak, Kent Wells, vice president of exploration and production, said in a conference call from Houston today. The process of switching caps will allow the oil to flow without restriction. BP will use surface vessels to capture as much as possible, said company spokesman Mark Proegler.
