Rep. Edward Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat, contends that BP PLC and the Coast Guard have used more of the chemicals than widely reported. On Saturday he demanded that federal officials provide his office with more information about use of the chemicals, which the Environmental Protection Agency limited in late May due to concerns about their effects on marine life.

Dispersant chemicals have long been sprayed onto offshore oil spills to break crude up into tiny particles that can be digested by bacteria that occur naturally in the ocean.

But in the wake of the Deepwater Horizon spill, what experts call an unprecedented amount of dispersant—about 1.8 million gallons—has been used. Not only was it sprayed on the surface of the Gulf, it was also injected deep underwater where oil was shooting out of the leaking well from late April until the well was capped last month.
