OTTAWA (Dow Jones)--Crude oil futures were down Tuesday, slipping below $45 a barrel on lingering concerns about the U.S. economy.

Light, sweet crude for May delivery was down $1.82, or 4%, at $44.06 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, after falling as low as $43.83 a barrel.
