Benchmark oil for December delivery fell 25 cents to $86.24 a barrel in midday trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange after earlier hitting a high for the year of $87.22 a barrel.

At the pump, the national average for a gallon of unleaded gasoline rose to $2.819 Friday, according to AAA, Wright Express and the Oil Price Information Service. That's a penny more than a week ago and 13.7 cents higher than a year ago.

There was good news on the economic front, as the Labor Department reported that employers added 151,000 jobs last month, the first net gain in five months. The unemployment rate remained at 9.6 percent.
