It’s tempting to wish for a moratorium on offshore drilling, given how shot through with public- and private-sector incompetence this story has been since April 20, when BP’s Macondo exploratory well began spilling an estimated 12,000 to 19,000 barrels of oil a day into the Gulf. In a worst-case scenario, BP’s underwater gusher just 60 km off the Louisiana coast will spill about 105 million gallons of oil, or almost 10 times the damage from the Exxon Valdez, until now the worst oil spill in U.S. history.
