For every rupee the consumer spends on petrol in Delhi, the Centre will earn about 29 paise, while the State Government will get about 16 paise. The balance 55 paise will go to the oil refining and marketing companies. Simply put, the exchequer will continue to take away about 45 paise towards taxes on every rupee spent on petrol.

Under the new retail price of Rs 51.43 a litre for petrol at Delhi, the excise outgo will continue to be at Rs 14.78. This is because the excise component has not been altered even while the Government has allowed de-regulation of petrol price. In the case of diesel, out of every rupee spent by the consumer in Delhi, 12 paise will go to the Centre, and 16 paise will go to the State. The balance 72 paise will go to the oil refining and marketing companies.
